What is the Purpose of the Assessment?

The Counseling and Applied Psychological Science (CAPS) faculty wanted to assess CAPS courses at the program level.  CAPS faculty wanted to know:  Are students learning program learning outcomes across the four core CAPS courses?

Describe the necessity for this assessment

8/26- Miyah Gaston, Catherine Cochran, Gabby Carter, Monica Buensuceo created a pre-test Google Form to assess a baseline of fall 2026 CAPS students the following questions:  1.What are careers you are interested in learning more about?, 2. What would be your dream job? Please describe this job in as much detail as possible., 3. What is your biggest need in career readiness skills?  For instance, do you need more practice with mock interviews or creating a resume? The Google Form was administered to all three fall 2026 CAPS' courses. Then, student responses were reviewed and synthesized by the Department of Workforce Development to begin planning employability strategies and developing internships to help these CAPS students, such as, CAPS Counseling Internship, Counseling Career Panels, Adelante Healthcare field trips. This collaborative work contributes to EMCC goal of "100% of students participating in experiential learning".

During the 2023-2024 academic year, CAPS faculty meet to review CAPS courses' competencies and course outlines to determine a "common learning" experience throughout the four CAPS courses.  Then, CAPS faculty selected CAPS program learning outcome (2):  Demonstrate use of oral, written, and interpersonal communication and basic helping skills needed within the counseling field.  This PLO is measured among all CAPS courses:  CAP120, CAP220, CAP240, and CAP260. In Spring 2024, CAPS240 students will be assessed with 8137.4226. PLO (2) through the CAP240 Final Reflection assignment, in Canvas.  CAP240 will begin collecting data through our dashboards with Canvas learning outcome assessment.

Describe how the practice will be implemented

Update:  Post-test/Google Form will be given to CAPS students to measure their growth through the employment opportunities through the Office of Workforce.

Interpret, compare, and describe the results

Update:  Once the post-test/Google Form results are reviewed and discussed by CAPS faculty about building more outside learning opportunities with the Office of Workforce Development.

CAP240 will continue to assess  8137.4226. PLO (2) through different semesters (Spring and Summer) and course modalities (online vs. in-person). With data, we can begin to understanding our CAPS students learning throughout different environments and semesters.  This will guide CAPS faculty with curriculum development, instructional methods, and course offerings.

After analyzing, and reflecting on the outcome, what are the next steps?

4/21/26:  CAP240, Introduction to Counseling Skills, students visited Adelante Healthcare-Goodyear Practice and applied their Counseling and Applied Psychological Science (CAPS) vocabulary through questions and conversations with Adelante Healthcare employees.  Office of Workforce Development, Associate Dean Grace Kirker and Student Services Analyst, coordinated this career building learning experience for EMCC CAP240 students with our community partner Adelante Healthcare-Goodyear Practice.

The next steps are to continue PLO assessment through CAP240.  Once more data is collected, there will be more CAPS faculty discussions about CAPS curriculum and instructional methods.
