The purpose of this assessment was to evaluate how Estrella Mountain Community College’s (EMCC) in-person New Student Orientation (NSO) model builds incoming student engagement, confidence, and readiness as they begin their academic journey. The orientation model provides students with direct, face-to-face connection to essential campus resources, peer leaders, advisors, and student support services.
By offering a balanced portfolio of full NSOs, mini NSOs, and targeted offerings such as a Spanish-language NSO, EMCC aims to create an inclusive, welcoming, and informative onboarding experience that strengthens students' sense of belonging and prepares them for first-semester academic success.
While online orientation tools exist, incoming students frequently face higher levels of anxiety and a lack of familiarity with college systems, physical campus resources, and support networks prior to their first term. Establishing an effective, high-yield in-person onboarding process is necessary to ensure proactive planning, reduce first-semester friction, and build family support systems.
Initial baseline data gathered in Fall 2025 demonstrated strong baseline demand across 19 full NSOs and 10 mini NSOs (261 RSVPs, 359 student attendees, 110 guests, and 1 Spanish-language NSO with 4 students and 3 guests). This highlighted a clear opportunity to optimize the overall event schedule by improving outreach, accessibility, and attendance yield per session.
The intervention strategy focused on high-impact engagement, expanded multi-channel communication, and optimizing event frequency:
- Multi-Channel Marketing: Partnered with Marketing to execute targeted emails, website highlights, social media ads, on-campus TV notices, and campus newsletters alongside improved RSVP reminder workflows.
- Hands-On Onboarding: Strengthened physical campus tours, interactive resource demonstrations, peer leader engagement, and real-time Q&A opportunities.
- Family Integration: Expanded guest involvement within orientation tracks to strengthen home support systems.
- Language Accessibility: Offered a dedicated Spanish-language NSO session to support multilingual families and enhance comfort with institutional navigation.
- Optimized Event Scheduling: Streamlined Fall 2026 scheduling by reducing full NSOs from 19 to 15, targeting higher attendance density per event throughout the summer.
Comparing Fall 2025 baseline data to Fall 2026 post-intervention data shows significant growth across all key metrics despite offering fewer total full sessions:
- RSVP Growth: Increased from 261 to 420 (+159 RSVPs / +61%), showing improved proactive planning and student interest.
- Student Attendance Growth: Increased from 359 to 477 students (+118 students / +33%), demonstrating stronger campus connection and event yield.
- Guest Attendance Growth: Increased from 110 to 141 guests (+31 guests / +28%), reinforcing student support systems.
- Language-Specific Outreach: While the Fall 2025 Spanish NSO served 4 students and 3 guests, the Fall 2026 standalone Spanish NSO session yielded no direct attendance, highlighting a specific area for structural refinement.
Overall, optimizing the event schedule alongside multi-channel marketing yielded higher attendance density per session, alignment with Maricopa Community College District Success Metrics (Guided Pathways Pillars: Connection, Confidence, and Commitment), and higher overall readiness entering the term.
The purpose of this assessment was to evaluate how EMCC’s in‑person New Student Orientation (NSO) model builds new student campus engagement, confidence, and readiness. By offering full, mini, and Spanish‑language NSOs, EMCC aims to create an inclusive onboarding experience that connects students with resources, peer leaders, and advisors. Following Fall 2025 baseline data (261 RSVPs, 359 students, 110 guests across 19 full and 10 mini NSOs), interventions were introduced for Fall 2026, including multi-channel marketing, improved RSVP workflows, enhanced hands-on tours, and a streamlined event schedule. Despite reducing full NSOs to 15, Fall 2026 data showed significant growth: RSVPs rose to 420 (+61%), student attendance reached 477 (+33%), and guest attendance increased to 141 (+28%). While direct turnout for the standalone Spanish NSO required strategy adjustments, the overall results demonstrate that higher-density, well-marketed in-person orientation sessions directly strengthen student readiness, family support networks, and alignment with Guided Pathways metrics. Next steps include embedding bilingual support across all main events and expanding cross-departmental partnerships for Spring 2027 planning.
